FWC/FWRI Model Advances Coral Outplanting Predications

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute has been instrumental in predicting coral outplanting locations throughout the Florida Keys. Staff had developed a model using the EcoPath/EcoSim and conducted field work in the Fall of 2016 to validate outplanting predictions. The FWRI researchers found very good agreement between in situ observations and model predictions. This work will be used to support future outplanting strategies, in addition to elucidating the environmental conditions that encourage coral outplanting success and failure.  FWRI staff attended the Workshop to Advance the Science and Practice of Caribbean Coral Restoration, Nov. 15-17, 2016, Fort Lauderdale, FL, and demonstrated an interactive version of the coral outplanting model during a session on prioritizing restoration sites through modeling and zonation.
